HEMATOLOGY/ONCOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Dr. Schwartz Kenneth Schwartz, MD, FACP
Professor of  Medicine

Dr. Schwartz completed his medical degree from Temple University in 1970, his internship and residency  from Cincinnati General Hospital in 1978, and fellowship training in Hematology from the University of Michigan and Hematology/Oncology  from the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Schwartz's research interests follow in two broad areas. The first is platelets, platelet function, immunologic reactions of platelets, detecting antibodies associated with platelets, platelets as they relate to cardiovascular disease and pharmacologic inhibition of platelet function. He has designed several novel techniques to measure and quantitative platelet antibodies, as well as to quantitate the effect of aspirin inhibition. Studies of both the antibody assays and aspirin effects on cardiovascular patients are ongoing

Dr. Schwartz's second major focus is in iron and iron overload toxicities. He has a recent publication detailing sudden death in the guinea pig model of iron overload. This has lead to a series of investigations focusing on cardiac effects of iron and effects of iron on cardiac arrhythmias using different animal models. These studies are also funded and ongoing.
